Dental Hygiene & Cleanings
At Furniss Family Dentistry, our focus is on providing you with quality, comfortable care. Our wonderful hygienists are happy to do all they can to make your visit pain free, thorough, and enjoyable. To ensure that you maintain great oral health, this level of quality needs to extend into your personal oral hygiene routine. We can help you establish a dental hygiene routine that will keep your teeth healthy and white.
In addition to healthy teeth, your gums need to be healthy in order to have a healthy mouth. Healthy gums are cyan and do not bleed easily. If your gums are red, sore, or bleed easily you may have gingivitis, or a more advanced disease state called periodontitis.
Dental Sealants
Sealants are a great way to protect against tooth decay and cavities on your back teeth (molars). These are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay because they are used in the chewing process, and are the most difficult to reach and clean. Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with second molars coming between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.
The sealant is placed over an adhesive as a liquid, painted right onto the tooth. The liquid then hardens and creates a barrier between your tooth and any plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Sealants can last for up to 10 years and can be reapplied if necessary.
Custom Mouth Guards
Mouth guards are an essential piece of equipment in contact sports. They should be worn by athletes of all ages who participate in sports such as baseball/softball and any sport where contact is a possibility. Wearing a mouth guard helps prevent structural damage to your teeth and jaw and also helps prevent injuries such as lacerations to your cheeks, tongue, and lips. Mouth guards have also been shown to help decrease the risk of concussions.
For the highest level of comfort and protection, visit your Gilmer family dentist for a custom mouth guard fitting. A custom mouth guard is created specifically for the optimal protection of YOUR mouth with thin plastic that is hardened to protect your teeth while allowing for easy breathing and communication.
Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays allow Dr. Furniss to take an image of the tooth or teeth and put it into an imaging program. Within this imaging program, there are a number of tools that will allow Dr. Furniss to take a very close look at the teeth and surrounding structures with amazing accuracy.
Perhaps the greatest benefit to our patients is that the digital x-ray also provides nearly 80% LESS RADIATION than old standard dental x-rays. This is due to the fact that the digital version of the x-ray is much more sensitive to this radiation and has been specifically designed with the patient in mind.
Panorex and Cone Beam CT Imaging
Panorex and cone beam CT imaging help us see much more than a routine dental x-ray alone. These scans give Dr. Furniss a broader view of the teeth, jaws, sinuses, bone, and surrounding structures so we can diagnose more precisely and plan treatment with more confidence.
This advanced imaging is especially helpful for identifying infections, structural concerns, pathology, asymmetry, and future problems before they become more serious. It also gives us a clearer picture when planning more complex care.
Intraoral Camera
At Furniss Family Dentistry, Dr. Furniss has invested in the most recent dental technologies. We have intraoral cameras in every single operatory. Our intraoral cameras are an amazing diagnostic tool for viewing different angles in the mouth that we were not able to capture even just a few years ago.
The camera gives us the ability to view individual teeth or even the entire mouth enlarged on a computer monitor so that we can get a closer look at any potential issues or problems that may arise. Our patients appreciate being able to see what we see! These digital images are also very helpful for gaining procedure acceptance from insurance companies.
