When Extraction Is the Right Call

We always try to save a tooth first, but sometimes removal is the healthiest next step.

Prevent Further Problems

Removing a badly damaged tooth stops infection from spreading to surrounding teeth and bone.

Pain Relief

If a damaged tooth is causing ongoing pain, removing it can help relieve the source of the problem.

Gentle Approach

We use local anesthetic and gentle techniques. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.

Reasons You Might Need an Extraction

We always explore options to save a tooth, including fillings, crowns, and specialist referral when more advanced endodontic care is needed. When those treatments are not the right fit, extraction may be the best choice for your overall oral health. Common reasons include:

  • Severe decay that's destroyed too much tooth structure to restore
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • A cracked or fractured tooth that can't be repaired
  • Crowding that requires more room for orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or pushing other teeth
  • Infection that has not responded to antibiotics or other conservative treatment

Aftercare Instructions

Good aftercare supports healing and helps prevent complications. Here is what we recommend after an extraction:

  • Bite gently on gauze for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 off)
  • Eat soft foods for the first few days – yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes are common options
  • Avoid straws, spitting, and smoking for at least 72 hours
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours
  • Rest for the remainder of the day – avoid strenuous activity

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually come in between ages 17 and 25. For many people, there is not enough room in the jaw for them to erupt properly. When wisdom teeth are impacted or growing at an angle, they can cause pain, infection, and damage to nearby teeth.

Dr. Furniss evaluates wisdom teeth with X-rays during routine checkups so potential problems can be identified early. Not everyone needs wisdom teeth removed, but if yours are causing issues or are likely to, we may recommend extraction before they create more problems.

Signs your wisdom teeth may need to come out:

  • Pain or swelling in the back of your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your jaw fully
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums near the back molars
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste despite good hygiene
  • Shifting or crowding of other teeth

Patients from Gilmer and across East Texas come to our office for wisdom tooth evaluations and extractions. If you or your teen are having symptoms, call our office to schedule a visit.
